AFM METHODOLOGY
Reading Comprehension — TCF Canada

UNDERSTANDING THE TEST

The TCF Canada reading comprehension section contains 39 multiple-choice questions to complete in 60 minutes. Each question has four options and only one correct answer. The questions increase progressively in difficulty, so leave enough time for the final passages.

CAN YOU RETURN TO AN EARLIER QUESTION?

In a computer-based test, you can return to a previous question and change your answer while the section is still in progress and time remains. Use this opportunity to review uncertain answers near the end, without spending too long on the early questions.

In a paper-based test, follow the answer-sheet instructions. An answer already marked on the sheet can be corrected only once, in the designated space.

SHOULD YOU ANSWER EVERY QUESTION?

Yes. A wrong answer and an unanswered question both receive zero points. There is no additional penalty for an incorrect answer. If you are unsure, select the option best supported by the text rather than leaving the question blank.

MANAGING THE 60 MINUTES

AFM suggests the following practice schedule:

  • Questions 1–15: about 12 minutes
  • Questions 16–30: about 22 minutes
  • Questions 31–39: about 21 minutes
  • Final review: about 5 minutes

Total: 60 minutes.

These times are study guidelines, not official time limits for groups of questions. Check the time regularly. Your priority is to read all 39 questions and select an answer for each before the section ends.

THE AFM METHOD IN 5 STEPS

  1. Read the question first.

Identify what you need to find: a detail, the main idea, the meaning of an expression, the writer’s intention, or the writer’s viewpoint.

  1. Read the passage with a purpose.

For a specific question, locate the relevant part of the text. For a question about overall meaning, consider the whole passage.

  1. Find evidence.

Ask which part of the text supports your choice. An answer can sound reasonable without being supported by the passage.

  1. Compare all four options.

Rule out options that contradict the text, overstate an idea, or introduce information that is not there. The correct answer may express the passage’s meaning using different words.

  1. Move on and return if needed.

If you get stuck, choose the best-supported option and continue. In a computer-based test, use your remaining time to review uncertain answers. Change an answer only when evidence in the text supports the change.

COMMON TRAPS

  • Confusing the topic of a passage with the writer’s position.
  • Missing a negative word, a limitation, or a contrast.
  • Choosing an option simply because it repeats words from the text.
  • Adding a plausible conclusion that the passage does not support.
  • Spending too much time on an unfamiliar word when context provides the essential meaning.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR RESULT

An official TCF Canada reading score is not simply the percentage of questions answered correctly. The scoring process also takes the characteristics of the questions into account. If an AFM practice test displays a percentage, level, or estimated score, it is a learning indicator, not an official TCF Canada result.

PRACTISING WITH AFM

Complete a full test in 60 minutes without a dictionary or interruptions. Afterwards, find the passage that supports each correct answer. For every mistake, identify the trap and record useful words or expressions. Review your pace as well: effective preparation combines careful reading, evidence-based answers, and time management.
