The TCF Canada listening comprehension section has 39 multiple-choice questions and lasts 35 minutes. Each question has four options and only one correct answer. The situations and questions become progressively more demanding.
The section assesses your ability to understand spoken French in different contexts, including conversations, announcements, interviews, and discussions of everyday or professional topics.
Each recording is played once. The question is asked after the audio passage. Listen to the entire passage, then pay close attention to the question that follows. You cannot pause the recording to think or replay it.
No. Unlike reading comprehension, the listening section moves forward with the recordings. Once a question has passed, you cannot go back to replay its audio or change your answer. Make your choice within the available time and give your full attention to the next question.
Yes. A wrong answer and an unanswered question both receive zero points; there is no additional penalty for an incorrect answer. If you are uncertain, choose the option that best matches what you heard before moving on.
If the answer options are visible, scan them quickly to identify the possible topic and the differences between them. Do not try to memorize every word.
At the start of the recording, identify who is speaking, to whom, in what situation, and for what purpose. Do not get stuck on an unfamiliar word.
Listen for reasons, intentions, changes of plan, contrasts, and limitations. Information given early in a recording may be qualified or corrected later.
The question comes after the audio passage. Check what it actually asks before choosing: a fact, a reason, an intention, an opinion, or a conclusion.
Compare the four options quickly. Eliminate those that contradict the audio or fail to answer the precise question. Select your best answer and focus on the next recording.
An official TCF Canada score is not simply the percentage of correct answers. The scoring process also takes the characteristics of the questions into account. A percentage, level, or estimated score shown in an AFM practice test is a learning indicator, not an official TCF Canada result.
First, complete a full test under exam conditions: listen to each recording once, without pausing or going back. After the test, review difficult questions in study mode. Find the part of the audio that supports the correct answer and identify why another option seemed tempting. The goal is to make a reliable choice on the first listen.
